> More information on compostable certifications

Are compostable cups actually compostable?
It depends on the certification they hold. Our cups are certified home compostable to the Australian AS 5810, meaning they fully break down in a home compost bin without needing industrial processing. Many cups labelled “compostable” only meet commercial standards (AS 4736) and won’t break down at home.
What is the most environmentally friendly disposable cup?
The best option is one that’s certified home compostable, made from sustainably sourced plant-based materials, and used with a matching compostable lid. Ours are designed to break down into healthy compost, not landfill waste or microplastics.
How to tell if a cup is compostable?
Look for recognised certification logos like AS 5810 Home Compostable or AS 4736 Commercially Compostable either on the products itself or on the product page. If there’s no logo, it’s just marketing – and likely greenwashing. For example, you can see our certification logos on this page and via the QR code printed on our cups.
How long does it take for a compostable cup to decompose?
In a healthy home compost, our cups are certified to break down in under 24 weeks. But we’ve ran multiple trials and seen them completely break down in as little as 7 weeks. Read more about the experiment we ran with Coolseats on the blog! The break down speed depends on temperature, moisture, and how active your compost system is.
Do compostable cups have plastic lining?
Most cups have some kind of plastic or bioplastic lining. Our home compostable cups have no traditional plastic lining. Instead, we use an aqueous coating that’s certified to safely break down completely via a home compost bin or a worm farm.
What is the difference between compostable and biodegradable?
* Compostable: Breaks down into safe, non-toxic compost within a specific time frame, verified by certification. * Biodegradable: Just means it will break down eventually, could take years, and it may leave harmful residues. Compostable is the gold standard.
Can I put compostable cups in my green council bin?
It depends on your council. If you decide to go with our cups, we may have a complete listing of which councils accept (or not) compostable packaging in their green bin, via the QR code. Generally, many don’t accept any cups (even compostable ones) in green bins due to contamination concerns. Check your local guidelines, or better yet: start composting at home!
Do compostable cups go in recycling?
No. Compostable cups should never go in recycling bins. They’re designed to be composted so the compost can feed the soil to grow food and plants. They belong in a home compost or commercial compost facility. Traditional plastic lined cups are recyclable in some countries but in Australia, we lack the technology to separate the paper from the plastic component so if disposed of in recycling, they actually contaminate the recycling stream meaning an even smaller recycling rate.
