Plastic cold cups are banned in South Australia since 2025 and plastic + PLA ‘compostable’ clear cups have been banned all together in Western Australia. Other States will follow suit and the reason why is very simple: they cannot be recycled or composted locally and create a staggering:

910 Million disposable cold cups* including plastic and bioplastic/PLA = 12.6 tonnes of waste!

Are compostable iced cups really compostable?

Yes! Our iced paper cups are certified home compostable (AS 5810). Unlike most “compostable” cups that require industrial facilities, ours break down in a regular backyard compost or worm farm, leaving no microplastics behind.

Do these cups contain PLA or plastic lining?

No. Our cups are completely PLA-free. Instead of using bioplastic, we use a certified home compostable aqueous coating that naturally decomposes in home compost conditions.

How long does it take for compostable iced cups to decompose?

In a healthy home compost, our cups are certified to break down in under 24 weeks. But we’ve ran multiple trials and seen them completely break down in as little as 7 weeks (and faster in a worm farm!). Read more about the experiment we ran with Coolseats on the blog! The break down speed depends on temperature, moisture, and how active your compost system is.

What is the difference between compostable iced cups and biodegradable cups?

“Biodegradable” is a vague term, it doesn’t guarantee where or how fast a product will break down. Our iced cups are certified home compostable, meaning they’re proven to fully decompose in home compost conditions within a set timeframe.

Are compostable iced cups better for the environment?

Yes. They reduce reliance on plastic and are a great alternative to bioplastics/PLA cups. Thet help cafés offer packaging that customers can compost at home, and support a circular economy by turning waste into healthy soil.
