> More information on compostable certifications

Are compostable fibre lids actually compostable?
Yes if they carry recognised certification such as AS5810. All our fibre lids are made from rapidly renewable bagasse and/or paper fibres and are certified home compostable (AS 5810) and industrially compostable (AS 4736), meaning they’ll break down in the appropriate compost environment without leaving harmful plastics or residues.
What material are they made from, and are they safe?
Most home compostable fibre lids use rapidly renewable bagasse or paper pulp. Some fibre lids are using a similar home compostable coating as the one used for coffee cups (aqueous or PHA coating) to improve the drinking experience and remove the soggy-ness.
What’s the difference between fibre lids and PLA lids?
Fibre lids (e.g., bagasse or paper) are typically home compostable, no added PFAS, and made from plant pulp. PLA lids are made from plant-based plastic and are only industrially compostable (AS 4736 or EN 13432). They are hardly compostable because of the specific infrastructures they require and, although they look like plastic, they are NOT recyclable in the recycling stream.
How long will a compostable fibre lid take to break down?
In a healthy home compost system, these fibre lids typically break down within a few weeks, depending on conditions like warmth, moisture and your compost's activity.
Can these lids go in recycling or kerbside bins?
Only if they are clean. A food/drink contaminated packaging should not end up in recycling as it will contaminate the stream. Instead, they belong in a home compost bin or a green bin.
What are the environmental benefits of using these lids?
They’re made from plant-based waste by-products (like sugarcane pulp), keep plastic out of compost streams, reduce waste sent to landfill, and can be disposed all together with the cup. When composted properly, they will return to the soil without toxins or microplastics to be used as compost.
